Hip and Knee pain are among the most common complaints affecting people of all ages and activity levels. The Hip and Knee joints are two of the most important joints in our body and are central to almost every movement we make through our skeleton.
Whether it’s a just annoying niggle or a severe pain and becoming an interference in completing day to day tasks from exercising, to walking, to climbing stairs or simply getting in and out of a car, these issues reduce mobility and impact our overall quality of life.
And an effective rehabilitation for Hip and Knee Pain is pivotal for not only reducing an individuals’ pain and discomfort levels but ensuring restored efficient movement and proper function is available at that the joint to get that individual back moving and doing things they love.
One powerful tool in rehabilitation that we can offer if you are struggling with Knee and Hip issues is Pilates.
Pilates is defined as a safe and effective method of rehabilitation and exercise that focuses on muscular balance, improves strength and flexibility. Pilates offers individuals a low impact, changeable rehabilitation and exercise setting to suit each individual’s rehabilitation needs whilst supporting their joint recovery without an added strain or high risk movement patterns for that joint in that particular time in their road to recovery.
Pilates focuses on controlled, slow movements, targeting muscular balance and whole body strengthening and stability. When individuals present with Hip and Knee pain their rehabilitation Pilates session will look at strengthening the muscles around the hip and knees, improving these joints alignment and enhancing the mobility and range of movement at these joints. Also, restoring functional movement patterns that we need when carrying out day to day tasks or sport specific movement patterns.
And that’s exactly what we did with one of our patients at Ebrook, Mr. S.
Mr S. came to see us at Ebrook Osteopathy and Sports Clinic after being Arthritic for a very long time whilst having treatment with us he was looking to have left side hip replacement but with no decision made yet currently. Through issues with his hips, he sometimes experiences some knee pain which can be put down to Mr S. being a patient in 70s and can be sometimes expected when struggling with Hip issues.
Mr S. is a funny and motivated individual that is determined to not let his hip problem stop him from enjoying his life and enjoy his experience on lots of lovely holidays with friends and family. So, we implemented to Reformer Pilates into Mr. S routine to strengthen the surrounding muscles at his Hips and Knees joints and to maximise the range of movement available at these joints. It offered a safe and supportive way to build strength whilst also improving balance, mobility and everyday function in movement patterns that we use in everyday life which the Reformer allows us to practice and improve on.
These reformer Pilates sessions have had remarkable results in a short period of time for Mr S. and as we continue to implement reformer Pilates into his exercise lifestyle even more improvements will be made in rehabilitating Mr S. into a stronger, more mobile, pain free individual.
So, if you want to get started on your Rehabilitation and experiencing Hip and Knee pain then come and try implementing into Pilates into your recovery.
