Inflammation is a normal healing process that our bodies perform to heal tissues that have been damaged. Sometimes, this process isn’t completed and inflammation and pain can linger and become chronic.
In situations where inflammation has persisted for longer than necessary, you may need some additional help to overcome your injury. This is the perfect time for a course of shockwave therapy.
Shockwaves are high energy sound waves, transmitted to the tissues to accelerate your body’s natural healing process. The sound waves improve blood flow to damaged tissues, and encourages cells to repair themselves. If tissues are subject to injury, fibrotic build up, or calcification, the shockwaves can help break down damaged or stiffened soft tissue materials, and help them to regenerate.
For people with chronic pain, shockwave therapy can have an analgesic (pain relieving) effect. There is great evidence to support shockwave therapy in the treatment of both acute and long-term problems, with many people reporting an immediate reduction in their pain following the first treatment.
Shockwave Therapy can be used to treat many different body parts, including the spine, shoulders, elbows, forearms, hips, knees, shins and feet.
Named conditions treated with Shockwave include;
Ideally shockwave is delivered as a course of treatment, as each session takes a cumulative effect on the inflamed tissue. To help patients adhere to the course of treatment, we offer shockwave as single appointments, or as courses of 6 or 10 sessions.
After your treatment it is important to support the effect of the shockwave therapy by refraining from actions that could pause the process of inflammation resolving. Therefore, it’s advised not to apply ice or ibuprofen gel, and not to take any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen or naproxen.
Shockwave Therapy may not be suitable if you are pregnant, take anti-coagulant medications, have a cardiac pacemaker, or a history of circulatory or neurological disorders. Please speak to a member of our team if you think there is a reason you may not be a good candidate for Shockwave Therapy before booking, and we will be happy to answer any questions.

No, shockwave treatment is a gentle, non-surgical option for people with longer term muscle or tendon pain. You will be able to hear the sound waves passing through your tissue in pulses as your practitioner applies the handpiece to the affected area, and while this may feel strange at first, it should not be painful.
Shockwave treatment works best as part of a planned treatment program. You can expect to see improvement in your symptoms in just a couple of appointments, but it’s best to see your course of treatment through to the end to make sure the results are lasting. Your practitioner will advise you on the best way to administer your shockwave treatment, but typically the course of treatment will last between 4 to 8 sessions.
Shockwave has recently become a more and more popular treatment option in physical therapy practices, as the machines are becoming more accessible to the buyer’s market. This being said, Shockwave has a relatively long history, being first used in the treatment of soft tissue injuries in the late 80s and early 90s.
