We saw the second Royal Wedding of 2018 this weekend, with Princess Eugenie marrying Jack Brooksbank at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
Eugenie proudly displayed the scar on her back from childhood scoliosis surgery. But what is scoliosis, and why does it happen?
Idiopathic adolescent scoliosis happens when the developing spine becomes twisted, or bent to the side during development, often starting in children between 10 and 15. This type of scoliosis doesn’t normally improve on it’s own, but the symptoms of mild scoliosis can be managed with exercise and manual therapy.
Princess Eugenie is the patron of the European School of Osteopathy, where our own Osteopaths Samantha and Lee both studied. Princess Eugenie has often spoken about the positive role osteopathy played in the treatment of her scoliosis before and after her corrective spinal surgery.
Other members of the Royal Family also have benefitted from the attention of osteopaths over the years; with one famous anecdote about an osteopath who encouraged the Queen to practice with a bag of flour on her head, weighed out to exactly match the weight of the Crown.
Emily and Hans also have Royal links, having been presented their degrees by Princess Anne, the Royal patron of the British School of Osteopathy, where they studied.
