Growing up in a family of health professionals, my path towards becoming a physiotherapist
was something I grew into, being surrounded by conversations about medical breakthroughs,
the fascination of how the body works, and the art of healing. However, what truly ignited my
passion was my passion for sports. From a young age, I was an avid athlete, dabbling into
different kinds of sports such as Ballet, Track and Field, Taekwondo and the Circus arts; this
shaped my understanding to the importance of peak physical performance and was no stranger
to how the chronicity of some injuries can affect you psychologically. My exposure to the world
of sports, combined with the influence of my family, naturally steered me towards physiotherapy,
as I not only wanted to explore if I could heal my own body from chronic pain but also wanted to
know how I could help other people who were experiencing similar physical injuries.
After getting my physiotherapy degree, though well equipped with ample manual tools to aid in
the recovery of patients, I craved the knowledge of wanting to further expand my ‘toolbox’ of
treatment methods. Not only was I drawn to the holistic approach that osteopathy offered,
emphasising the profound impact of the body’s structural integrity on overall health, the addition
in perspective felt like a natural progression, allowing me to delve deeper into the realm of
healing and unlocking new ways to support my patients on their journey to wellness.
In the world of healthcare, the pursuit of holistic well-being and a passion for helping people is a
common thread that unites professionals across various disciplines. My journey from being a
physiotherapist to obtaining another modality as an osteopath is a testament and a story of
personal and professional growth. As a physiotherapist, my primary focus was on physical
rehabilitation and optimising movement. I found immense satisfaction in assisting patients in
recovering from injuries, surgeries, and managing chronic conditions. Now with the addition of
Osteopathy, with its emphasis on the interconnectedness of the body’s structure and function, I
am able to expand my scope of clinical reasoning and tackle complex conditions with even more
techniques that I had picked up in osteo school such as Osteopathic Manipulative Treatments
(OMTs)/ high velocity Thrusts (HVTs) to provide even more alternative treatment methods to
patients if they did not resonate well with one method.
“My journey from being a physiotherapist to obtaining another modality as an osteopath is a testament and a story of personal and professional growth“.
When first starting out my journey of being an osteopath, I embarked on a rigorous educational
journey. I pursued a degree in osteopathy at the University College of Osteopathy, which
included in-depth coursework in anatomy, physiology, and manual techniques. This
comprehensive training allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of how the body’s
structure, including bones, muscles, and ligaments, impacts its overall health. One of the key
differentiators of osteopathy to physiotherapy is the use of hands-on techniques to diagnose and
treat various musculoskeletal and systemic issues. But the degree did not come easy, as i
recall, in order to pass this MSc course, my friend and I created 7-day/week revision timetables
to keep ourselves on track for all our OSPEs and essays, it was truly a test to our resilience but
with the mutual support and motivation we provided each other, we both managed to pass the
course with flying colours and I definitely am truly humbled to have received an annual prize for
the ‘Best Overall Performance’ award for my MSc Osteopathy course during my graduation
ceremony this year!
In summary, not only had I gained a newfound appreciation for the power of touch and the
body’s capacity to self-regulate when disturbances are addressed. My evolution from being a
physiotherapist to the addition of osteopathy has brought new dimensions to my practice. I now
integrate my knowledge from both disciplines to offer a more holistic approach to healing. I can
assess and address the root causes of pain and dysfunction, not just the symptoms. This
comprehensive approach has allowed me to better serve my patients and witness remarkable
outcomes in their health and well-being! My journey is a nod to the ever-evolving nature of
healthcare. As I continue to expand my knowledge and skills, I am excited to see how this dual
perspective will further enhance my ability to help individuals on their path to wellness, and I am
ready to dive headfirst into what else the world of medical healthcare has in store for me to
learn!
