Damp, cold weather has been known to exacerbate the painful symptoms of arthritis. We’re not sure why this happens; science’s best theories relate to barometric pressure causing soft tissues like ligaments and tendons to expand… It might be that, probably combined with getting out and about less in the cold weather. Here are my top tips for sufferers of osteoarthritis to keep comfortable and cosy over the winter.
Layer Up!
If you’re going outside, be prepared! The first rule of keeping warm may be keeping dry, but the second rule is layers! Tuck your vest into your pants, like your nan told you to!
Add scarves and gloves to keep your neck and hands warm, but don’t forget a hat! The small joints between the neck and the skull need to be kept toasty too!
Make it an inside job…
Popping out quickly to take the bin to the kerb seems like nothing, but it’s enough to drop the temperature at your extremities. Long outdoor jobs like leaf raking, gardening or clearing snow can wait, or be done by a relative.
Of course, it is vital to keep moving to prevent joints from stiffening, and to maintain good strength in your muscles – but take the winter as an opportunity to accomplish all the indoor jobs you put off over the summer.
Be kind to yourself
Osteoarthritis is a normal part of how our joints wear with time and age. Taking it slowly isn’t a reason to beat yourself up. Have a hot drink, wrap up warm and be kind to yourself this winter season.
