Injections are often not the first line of treatment in clinic. Because injections are more invasive than conservative treatments like manual therapy or rehabilitation exercises, we need to exhaust those options first.
However, injections can be a good treatment option for people with long-standing joint or tendon pain that arises from an inflammatory source. These can include conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis, chronic tendinopathy, rotator cuff tendonitis, trigger finger, and plantar fasciitis.
We can inject synovial joints such as the shoulder, acromioclavicular joint, elbow, wrist, fingers, thumb, knee, ankle, foot and toes. It is worth noting that spinal and hip injections need to be conducted in a surgical environment, usually under ultrasound or X-ray guidance, and as such hips and spinal joints are not injected at Ebrook Clinics.
Corticosteroid injections are sometimes administered alone, or in combination with saline or a local anaesthetic.
These injections contain a steroid medication that interrupts the inflammatory mechanism, and offers the patient a pain-free window to complete a meaningful rehabilitation program.
Corticosteroid injections can offer remarkable and immediate pain relief for people with both chronic joint or tendon pain.
It’s important to engage in a good program of treatment around steroid injections to gain maximum benefit, as the number of injections you can receive is ultimately limited.
Examples of musculoskeletal conditions where corticosteroid injections may provide a valuable addition to your treatment include:
Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. You might recognise its name from moisturiser adverts, and this is because it has incredible hydrophilic properties. Hyaluronic acid draws water molecules towards itself, and when injected into synovial joints can provide a renewed lubrication that is lost in conditions like osteoarthritis.
Because hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body, there is no limit to the number of injections a patient can receive. If you find that hyaluronic acid makes a great improvement in your joint pain, you may choose to enlist in a program of annual or biannual injections to maintain your range and quality of movement.
Ostenil Plus is Ebrook’s hyaluronic acid product of choice for joint injections, because it requires only one injection to be administered, as opposed to other products which instead require a course of injections.
Hyaluronic Acid Injections may provide a valuable addition to your treatment if you have Osteoarthritis of the shoulder or knee.

Injection therapies may not be advisable if you have had poor reactions to injections or local anaesthetics in the past, have poorly managed diabetes, or are taking certain blood thinning or anticoagulant medications. Please fill out the pre-injection screening questionnaire at the time of booking to give our practitioners as much information as they need in order to treat you safely.
