It’s ski season, and arguably the busiest week for many resorts is February half term… This week in clinic we usually see an influx of patients with ski related injuries and ailments, so we’ve put together this handy SOS guide to common aches, pains and complaints of skiers for a bit of self-triage!
Your legs are on fire!
You may not have been skiing before, or at least not put much pre-season training in. If your butt and thighs are burning, and your waddling around, the chances are you are experiencing DOMS.
DOMS stands for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness after exercise, and can persist for a few days in some extreme cases.

You fell on your bottom…
And now you have lower back pain. A fall on to hard ice or compacted snow can come sharp! If you’re left with muscle spasms and back pain, it’s time to call the Osteopath.
Once you get to the clinic, they can assess which parts of your body have been affected by the fall, and best advise you on exercises, stretches and hands-on manual therapy to smooth out any remaining muscle tightness.

After the necessary scans, and (maybe) surgery to reconstruct your ligaments (commonly the anterior cruciate and medial collateral knee ligaments in these kinds of injuries…) it’s time to get yourself into clinic!
Rebuilding the strength in the muscles around the knee is vital to helping the longevity of your recovery. Ligament injuries can be devastating to the stability of the knee, so the muscles need to be able to compensate.
In clinic, these patients often come under the care of an Osteopath for treatment, and a Sports Therapist to give them an exercise programme to follow.
