The second part of my training is taking place in Kensal Rise, north London. After the initial weekend of exercise practice and classification, I was looking forward to getting stuck in to more.
This weekend would be focused on learning how to put a class together, to choose appropriate levels of exercises for different patient groups, and finding flow in your practice. All three of these turned out to be challenging! It was great to see Pilates adapted for different pathologies and patient groups, and our Master Trainer, Mel Bryant was an amazing help – practicing with the APPI since 2004, she has a massive knowledge base to draw on.
The second day we each got to have a go at teaching the class. My heart was in my throat by the time it was my turn – I haven’t done much public speaking since university, and when I do these days, it’s only ever for topics I have good understanding of.
Trying to remember the exercise name, the purpose of it, and all the visual cues was daunting – but I’m sure with a bit of experience I’ll get there!
The good thing about training with the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute is that they are always referring back to patient populations we see in clinic. It’s easy to see how Pilates can be applied in my every day clinical practice – whether that’s for elderly patients, with osteoporosis, or who are at risk of falls… All the way through to mothers trying to rectify a post-partum diastasis in their abdominal muscles.
There really are few people who wouldn’t benefit from Pilates style rehabilitation exercises. Lower back pain, office workers, sports people looking to refine their technique… the list goes on. I’ve been using more of these exercises in practice for my patients already and found them to be really effective!
Just to complete my third weekend of advanced training, and you’ll be looking at an osteopath with a post graduate qualification in Pilates instructing! Wish me luck!
